Why were there floats on the water around gasometers?
When I was a child, I remember what looked like ping pong balls on the water at the bottom of the local gasometer. Someone I know said that their local one had bigger floats. Does anyone know what they were there for please? I don't know if they were there later than the mid 70's but they were certainly there in the late 60's & early 70's.
I understand the concept of the water, but why were the balls/floats on the top of it please?
They are ball valves to keep the water at the correct level.
